Recently got wise to a cool synth blog from an undisclosed email list:
http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/

This one has lots of nice synth pictures, some text and even youtube videos for some articles. The question I ask you, is where are the samples. How do we know that the blogger isn't just copying images from the manufacturer's webpage and post them online? Over all this blog seems fairly active and could be worth subscribing, to keep up on the world of hardware synths.

I read that it had been put back up and I can't find it anywhere in
a google search.

Also, there seems to be no mention of it in this tribe which seems strange.

I was trying to show a student of mine, this impressive collection in talking about
drum machines.

This episode feature: Cypod “Nintendo Girl”, from the Daly City Records Mochipet remix competition; Saturnines “Ride Bikes” from the peloton-musique 2X-LP bicycle compilation; and Mystified “Leakage”

keyboard museum .orf has a drum machine section with many flash based virtual drum machines

http://www.keyboardmuseum.org/d_machines/vdrums.html

some of them are kinda basic, but all in all it looks like a great online resource for learning about and experiencing drum machines with your computer

that would be great...thanks

it is important that the person can also handle the other 'tech support' stuff...but, really, estalbishing a relationship with Mick and getting h im interested in learning more about what makes his computer tick and how to use it for music would be the main thing.
And since he's 14 and all that...well, 'nuff said.

>
>Forgive my sending this out-of-Yoyo, but I really do want everyone to
>see it. Surely someone here is, or knows, this person.
>
>Here's the setup:
>
>Four people. Frightening though it is to contemplate, I am the most
>compu-literate. The others are wife, Jamie; Nate, 16, Mickey 14. All
>except Nate have Macs; he has a Dell PC
>
>I am looking for someone to adopt us, technologically speaking. I am
>prepared to pay reasonably for this service.
>
>Here is what needs to be done (as you will see, it is a real grab-bag):
>
>* jamie's older G4 Powerbook has a weaker wireless connection than my
>newer G4. Can we upgrade her wireless card?
>
>* We currently have an unprotected wireless network; should we?
>
>* We need to look into the virus protection for the three computers
>other than mine (keep in mind that one is a PC, the other 3 are Macs)
>
>* Jamie, Nate and Mickey may have 'issues' I am not aware of
>
>* There are possibly improvements possible for our home network
>(networked printer?) that I am not aware of...
>
>and, probably the most important:
>
>* Mickey is a jazz musician (sax) and to some extent plays with
>Garageband. He is not, however, technically inclined to date. I would
>love to get him introduced to the possiblities for using his computer
>creatively for musical purposes, which would probably take getting
>him to understand some basic computer stuff in ways he doesn't yet. I
>wouldn't say he's questing for this information (he'd rather watch
>tv), so the issue here is for our Compu-paragon to develop enough of
>a fun, trusting relationship with Mickey so that he is open to some
>degree of tutelage and exploration.
>
>Anyone interested in talking to me about this?
>
>/d
>

What is with all these hacks? Do hacker's have ethics. It's like graffiti on trees, Not cool! Hopefully the taggers will learn that rooftops with phat peaces is kind alright, and digital hackers will stick to gunning for fox news or the army. Seriously low budget artistic sites don't need it. Electronic video music needs more venues and content, please stop fowlling up the ones there are!

Hi DMM!

So, I work at http://www.techsoup.org now and we're doing this project called NetSquared. The site for the project is here: http://www.netsquared.org. It's a pretty cool project, based on Web 2.0 application in the non-profit sector.

I'm writing to:
1) Invite you to the first Net Tuesday event that's happening next week.
2) Invite you to collaborate with us. VJs, Electronic Musicians, etc. - please let me know if you're interested in participating in upcoming events and I will plug you in with the right people.

This is a great opportunity for networking and community building. I also think the WhiteBox Project could lend itself as a good model for documentation on this project.

Anyway, info below on the event next week.

I hope this finds you all well in the land of the beeps.

/ Handy

*NET TUESDAYS Launch on 11/8 in SF: Share, Collaborate, Create Social Change*

Are you a nonprofit worker who’s interested in using emerging technologies to share and collaborate with others and transform the way you work? Are you a tech expert who loves new web toys and who’s interested in finding ways to use your skills and interests for social change?

Learn about the extraordinary work being done and the creative uses of nonprofits that are adopting networking technologies.

Chris Messina of Flock ("the swiss army knife of browsers", http://www.flock.com/), and Marnie Webb, nonprofit tech master will present. Nonprofit workers, tech-heads and assorted stragglers interested in remixing the web for social change will carry the conversations.

Where: Varnish Art Gallery, 77 Natoma St, San Francisco

When: Tuesday, November 8th, 2005, 6-8pm

Price: Admission, music, art, great conversation and cookies are all FREE. You have to pay for your own drinks.

Let us know you're coming at http://upcoming.org/event/38541

or http://www.zvents.com/events/show/80115

If you have any questions about how it all works, these meetups are where you can learn and get answers through training sessions, demos, Q&A, and connects.

Net Tuesdays will be held on the second Tuesday of every month. As these meetups evolve through a cadre of volunteers there will be more and more examples of how our sector is adopting and integrating the next generation of internet tools. These gatherings will be most successful if they meet your needs. Please come and let us know what you need.

Come talk to nonprofit workers about technology, talk to tech junkies about nonprofits, find out about new web tools, or more. Check our page at http://www.netsquared.org/blog/chris-locke/net-tuesdays If you have any questions, please email net2@techsoup.org

In 1997, over a decade after production ceased on the original TB-303, the introdution of ReBirth launched a new generation of music software. Backed by critical acclaim and a dedicated fan following, this innovation set an important precedent for the music sofware industry.

On September 1st, 2005, Propellorhead Software announced that the era of ReBirth had come to an end and created the ReBirth Museum to commemorate its history. Visitors are welcome to tour the website, learn about its developers and community, and download the final version of Rebirth including a library of mods, songs, and third-party applications - all free of charge.

Who Owns the "Tenderloft" ?

Apparently someone is listening, here at DMM.tribe.net we have received some fan mail, DJ M writes:

I started the Tenderloft with some friends back in January 2002. Since then the space has been taken over by M***** T and the Drum Machine museum guys. Could I trouble you to discontinue referring to the space as "Tenderloft" in your online promotions? I've spoken with people at Drum Machine Museum about this in the past and they have consented to do so. From the perspective of the original residents, the Tenderloft identity went with us when we moved out, and we reserve the right to the name. Perhaps you could call it "Drum Machine Museum" or simply "142 Taylor?"

Thanks, all the best

Response:
First off, dmm.tribe.net would like to apologize for any confusion regarding posting to online message boards and the use of the "Tenderloft identity." At the same time, DJ M in his letter does not claim to have thought up the name; rather, he and his friends merely used it. This seems some what unlikely, since he has 0 friends; maybe they're not on tribe?
Does anyone know who thought up the name "Tenderloft"? How does DJ M feel about http://tenderloft.tribe.net ? Understandably DJ M does not claim to hold a copyright on the title, but as creative people dmm.tribe.net wants to do the right think and respect people's intellectual property. The question is, does DJ M own the title or is it in public domain?
On the other hand since dmm has the space now what should we call it to?
One suggestion that I thought of was, the "Sky box." This would be in reference to earlier dmm events known as the "White Box."

It seems that that particular part of the SF theater district is changing rapidly; almost ever venue on the strip has been renamed in the last few years:

Now The Arrow Bar (Neon Cobra) vs Then The Charleston (dart board)
Now Lit (pool table) vs. Then Pow (playstation)
Now Anu (Straight Irish) vs. Then Ginger's Two (Gay Afro-American)

And lastly why do I keep changing out at all these dive bars?

I hope everyone had a good night out. My was mixed. Mile Tileman displayed a full frequency understanding of Logic Audio during his workshop, and the Audiovoid set was real cool to vj too. The introduction of live action painting really added to the party vibe thanks too Brian Barnelco. If only everyone was into listen electronic music, on the way home I got jacked. Just off bart in East Oakland five guys jumped out of a car and went after me. The bloody me up a little (I'm typing this up with a sprained hand), but all they got was a skateboard and my left shoe. Download some MP3's and look at photos @ http://cypod.blogspot.com/

A Tale of Two Laptop Performances

A tale of two point one laptop performances

Monday night after work, a small crowd gathered in the Mills college concert hall for the Song Lines series latest offering of Tim Perkis and Wobbly. Some of the of the audience members may have been surprised to learn that Simon W. Smith would not be playing, but all were excited about the substitution of two well established local artists. The music began in the ethereal ambient style, which evolved in to a serial medley of processed sounds and impulses.
The second movement of the evening was very quiet, at times I was wondering whether we were listing to an extended reverb effect or someone from the practice rooms down the hall. And then deep, fast and hard rhythmic thumpings came through the spatialized Mills concert hall PA. These beats lasted only long enough to establish their rhythmic intent before being changed up into still yet alternately timed stylings.
Ultimately the performance expressed a great deal of freedom from structure. The duo’s sound would most likely falling into the sound effects genre. Of particular interest was the artists use micro tonality in manipulating the samples and ever shifting downbeat for a rhythmic base. The group’s instrumentation consisted of one laptop performer and on CDJ, sequence sampler performer. The usual question and answer period instead becomes a casual networking opportunity for an audience almost entirely composed of electronic musicians.
On the other side of the bay, some time after midnight Sunday morning a veritable chamber ensemble entirely composed of Laptops gathers. The group consisted of (from left to right): Abe/Damiak (konstrukt), Daniel/Twittering Machine, David Molina, Mochipet, Jason, Andy Highland, Gavin, Terrac and was collective called the mochipet techno orchestra. The group is there to put a close to the afternoon’s workshop on Circuit Bending hosted by the Drum Machine Museum. Already a well established alternative space, the venue formerly known as the Tenderloft is host to a variety of people including party goers, break dancers, electronic music nerds and other colourful characters.
The music is very steady, a testament to the number of laptops that can be slaved to the same MIDI clock. The sounds mostly stem from clean banks of samples of short drum sounds. Another impressive feet, is how some many laptops can fit together with out making the sound too dense. Assumedly each one is providing just a short rhythmic phrase. Though they played but one long song, it subtly changed as the different rhythms reconfigured them selves to provide added nuance and variation.
The crowd loved it as the dance floor filled up and arms plus legs swung around in time to the beats. I guess the old saying about after midnight is true. It is good to know that music is still as a social catalyst; though, in each case for subtly different groups of people.
