To fix your problems:

>* jamie's older G4 Powerbook has a weaker wireless connection than my
>newer G4. Can we upgrade her wireless card?

-You should get a relay point for the signal that is closer to jaime's room. Airport express would probably work well since you like Mac.

>* We currently have an unprotected wireless network; should we?

-Configure your wi-fi hub's a wpa (better) or wep (older) then tell your household what the password is.

>* We need to look into the virus protection for the three computers
>other than mine (keep in mind that one is a PC, the other 3 are Macs)

-For the Mac's you don't really need anti-virus yet. For the PC I suggest creating a restore point, and some anti-virus. Free Computer Associates McAfee (I think), Win Defender beta, or for a little money Norton or Trent Micro

>* Jamie, Nate and Mickey may have 'issues' I am not aware of
Don't we all

>* There are possibly improvements possible for our home network
>(networked printer?) that I am not aware of...

-You have to enable windows and print sharing on the mac the printer is connected to.

>* Mickey is a jazz musician (sax) and to some extent plays with Garageband.

-Recording is a good start in the field of computer music. There are some other fun/cool computer music programs out there; however, its just like the sax you got'ta practice to get good.

that would be great...thanks

it is important that the person can also handle the other 'tech support' stuff...but, really, estalbishing a relationship with Mick and getting h im interested in learning more about what makes his computer tick and how to use it for music would be the main thing.
And since he's 14 and all that...well, 'nuff said.

>
>Forgive my sending this out-of-Yoyo, but I really do want everyone to
>see it. Surely someone here is, or knows, this person.
>
>Here's the setup:
>
>Four people. Frightening though it is to contemplate, I am the most
>compu-literate. The others are wife, Jamie; Nate, 16, Mickey 14. All
>except Nate have Macs; he has a Dell PC
>
>I am looking for someone to adopt us, technologically speaking. I am
>prepared to pay reasonably for this service.
>
>Here is what needs to be done (as you will see, it is a real grab-bag):
>
>* jamie's older G4 Powerbook has a weaker wireless connection than my
>newer G4. Can we upgrade her wireless card?
>
>* We currently have an unprotected wireless network; should we?

>
>* There are possibly improvements possible for our home network
>(networked printer?) that I am not aware of...
>
>and, probably the most important:
>
>* Mickey is a jazz musician (sax) and to some extent plays with
>Garageband. He is not, however, technically inclined to date. I would
>love to get him introduced to the possiblities for using his computer
>creatively for musical purposes, which would probably take getting
>him to understand some basic computer stuff in ways he doesn't yet. I
>wouldn't say he's questing for this information (he'd rather watch
>tv), so the issue here is for our Compu-paragon to develop enough of
>a fun, trusting relationship with Mickey so that he is open to some
>degree of tutelage and exploration.
>
>Anyone interested in talking to me about this?
>
>/d
>
